RV TIPS & TRICKS

Tips for RVing with your Cat

So you’re ready to embark on an RV adventure but you don’t want to leave your furry companion behind. Bringing a dog along for the ride doesn’t seem to be a big deal. You’ve probably seen a lot of campers with their dog, but a cat? Is it even advisable?

The quick answer is yes. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that some cats seem to enjoy the adventure as much as you do! However, before you buckle kitty up in your RV, there are a few steps we recommend you take to help your cat adjust to the experience.

Age and general physical condition

It’s a question you might well ask yourself before leaving on a trip, but it also applies to your furry friend.

Allow for a slow adaptation

Like a new house or an apartment, your RV is an unknown space for your cat, so allow it time to explore. A great way to start is when your RV is parked at home. Make sure you’re there as well. Your presence will reassure your companion, as it becomes familiar with the new surroundings. Expect that your cat might hide at first. Be patient. If the first attempt doesn’t go smoothly, don’t worry—try again later. Frequent visits will help your furry friend adjust before you embark on your journey.

Safe travels

Some cats enjoy car rides, but most need time to acclimate. Start with short trips. If your cat gets car sick, consult your vet for medication. When traveling, always place your cat in a carrier and secure it properly. Never let your cat roam free in the RV while you’re driving because you won’t be able to see what it’s up to and an unfortunate accident could happen.

A controlled environment

Once you reach your destination, your cat should feel more at ease. However, unless your cat enjoys leash walks, it’s best to keep them inside the RV during outings. Remember, extreme temperatures can be harmful. Check the weather forecast before planning outdoor activities. If it’s too hot or cold, ensure your RV’s climate control is working properly. Consider installing a remote temperature monitor and cameras to keep an eye on your cat while you’re away. Don’t forget to provide water and food and make sure they have a comfortable spot to relax and look out the windows.

Outdoor adventures

If your cat enjoys being outdoors, consider using a harness with a leash, or an outdoor enclosure. Some cats enjoy walks, while others prefer to explore in a backpack carrier. Either way, never let your cat roam unsupervised outside the RV. They could get lost or become prey to predators.

Litter solutions

Make sure to bring a litter box for your cat’s bathroom needs. The clay litter found at Costco just won’t cut it. Opt instead for high-quality clumping litter, as space is limited in an RV. This type of litter is effective at controlling odours and is environmentally friendly.

Documents on hand

In case of an emergency, bring a copy of your cat’s medical records. Ensure they’re up to date on their vaccinations. Bring any necessary grooming supplies.

As you can see, taking an RV adventure with your cat is not only possible, it can also be enjoyable for both you and your furry friend. Just be sure to plan ahead and take the time to let your cat get acclimated to the RV environment and being on the road.
